I always use all points autofocus for my sports shots. I've only been using this lens for a short time and while it doesn't always focus on the correct subject, I've found it to be pretty reliable.
Try bumping your ISO to 400 and watch your exposure times if there is enough light drop to ISO 200 and maintain your 1/500th exposure then go for it. You might get by with slightly slower speeds depending on the action, but I would recommend 1/500th as a target.įrom the look of the sample image above it might have been a gray, overcast day which might have been limiting you exposure times at ISO100. If you want sharp, frozen images you should be looking for exposures of 1/500 or faster. All I can suggest is a steady arm and use what you can to support agoĪlan hyland - What sort of exposure times were you getting with your ISO set at 100? Unless it was super sunny I would guess that the focus issues might have more to due with motion blur than missed focus. I do use multiple focus because football is a hard sport to predict where the focus is needed. My England shots are at night so the iso is up to 800 but the 40D can handle that. For Football / soccer you have to anticipate where the action takes place. Good thing, because I'm taking mine to its first college soccer match on friday :) I'm in the college newspaper class so it'll be in the paper. Sounds like the answer for people like me who were wondering- is the multiple focus points screwed up the focus. If you view my photstream you can see the original version without the focus and exposure overlays. I'm not thrilled that this shot, and several others that I didn't upload weren't in focus. I've gotten some good feedback in the 40D group. You weren't thrilled with the results? Can you be a little less vague? How were you not thrilled with the results? Focus speed? Sharpness? Thanks in advance for any advice you may have. I'm not sure if that would make a difference or not. One thing I forgot to do was use center point only for focusing. In my case I was shooting aperature priority f/4, ISO 100, AI Servo and H drive mode. I won't cross post the thread I started in the 40D group since that was the camera body I was using but I'd be curious to know what settings you use.
